The world NO. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, uses floatation therapy to stay on top of his game.

Water Temple Floatation Centre in High Street Armadale Melbourne are excited and proud to have been a part of the support team that helped Novak achieve even more greatness by securing an eighth and tenth Australian Open title and also taking his ranking up to NO. 1 … he truly is the King of Melbourne tennis!

Australians are sports fanatics at the best of times and January marks the beginning of the Tennis season. I recently learnt from Novak, that Tennis is one of the most demanding sports as it has the longest playing season, from January to November.

Novak has been using floatation therapy for about 5 years now. He says,

“it helps with my physical recovery after a game,  and move effortlessly into a meditative state, enabling me to quickly refocus and release the mental pressure and stress that playing at this elite level of tennis inflict on the mind and body”.

He loves that more float centres are opening around the world. Water Temple has really enjoyed hosting Novak and his team for Australian Open, both in 2020 and 2023.

We congratulate him on his win in 2020 and again in 2023 making him world No.1 and the only male tennis player to have won 23 Grand slams, a Tennis Icon!

Floatation therapy is becoming well recognised and frequently used amongst Elite athletes, not just for the faster muscular recovery, but also for its ability to remove stress from the body and mind, by simply relaxing in the concentrated Epsom salts solution.

Anything that helps improve an athlete’s performance and gives them a competitive edge over an opponent!

Stars are taking notice

This is where Floatation is really coming into its own, either for the individual or a team, Steph Curry ( American Basketball player)  is a big float fan. Tom Brady (American footballer) and John McEnroe ( American Tennis player) was introduced to floatation therapy by Shoshana Leibner in the 1970s. There is a growing movement for sporting teams in America that have installed their own tanks in their training facilities.

The stress and strain that one’s body goes through from a game of tennis affect the very base level of cellular health, which needs time to recover.

Magnesium is needed for over 500 enzymatic functions in the body, think of the body as being like an electrical system, so the electrical sparks happening in our body is what enables the communication to happen within every system in the body.

From the electrical impulse in our muscles that are used to move and react in nanoseconds, the rapid firing of the neurotransmitters in the brain to respond instantly and react to the visual and auditory queues it receives, or the electrical pulse of the heart needed to pump the blood into the muscles.

The body and mind are connecting and communicating, rapidly firing and enabling the individual to run around a court. The body and brain need to be properly hydrated, with water and essential minerals, so all the cells are communicating and releasing the hormones and chemicals required to achieve these results, magnesium being one of the most important.

From the moment you step into a tank, you are supported by the dense concentration of magnesium sulphate, enabling the body to experience weightlessness or zero gravity.

It is the synergistic effect that happens while floating that not only speeds up recovery after a sports game or intensive training session, improving the micro and macro circulation of blood flow to the extremities, removing all pressure from the joints and easing any possible pain. The cortisol and adrenaline that has been surging through the system gets flushed out.

When the lights are turned off (visual) and you experience the silence (auditory) and stillness, all your senses are enhanced, you become acutely aware of your body, your breath, your heartbeat or the rumbling of your stomach, as they relax and let go of all stress and tension these systems have been holding. The brain gets the much-needed time to switch gears into neutral it is very much like hitting the reset button.

Floating improves focus

Research is showing the significant benefits of floatation therapy known as REST (restricted environment stimulation therapy) and the added benefit of combining the two enhances the visualisation techniques that are being used around the world by sports psychologists at this elite level.

It is much easier for the brain to achieve a state of theta brain wave pattern, reached after years of meditation practice or just before falling asleep, when it doesn’t have to be aware of gravity, making this a fast-track way to a deep meditative state.

So, if you have ever thought about trying this amazing therapy that has been around since the 70s, we welcome you to visit us at Water Temple Floatation Therapy and who knows which tennis star or other athletes you’ll bump into.
